Musical Monday on Dansbury
A Celebration of Community...
I believe the City should be doing more to encourage and support small neighbourhood events that bring people together. I was fortunate to attend Music Monday in Ward 5 as a candidate after being invited by local residents, and I was struck by how welcoming and positive the afternoon was. Neighbours gathered with friends, listened to music, talked, laughed and simply enjoyed being part of their community.
Rather than viewing every gathering through the lens of complaints, noise and bylaws, I think we should first ask: How can we make these events work for the neighbourhood?
This was an afternoon event with minimal impact on surrounding residents and was open to anyone who wanted to attend. Events like this build the social connections that make a neighbourhood feel like a community. They can reduce isolation, introduce neighbours to one another and create a sense of belonging that no municipal program can easily replicate.
As a councillor, I would like to see the City make it easier for residents to organize small community events by providing clear, simple guidelines, streamlined permits where appropriate, access to public spaces and practical support from City staff. I would also encourage a neighbourhood-first approach to resolving concerns, with organizers and residents communicating before complaints automatically become enforcement issues.
There will always be a need for reasonable rules around noise, safety and public spaces. But I believe the starting point should be encouragement, not restriction.
A healthy city isn’t simply a collection of houses and streets. It is a collection of communities. I want Waterloo to be a city where neighbours are encouraged to come together, celebrate their neighbourhoods and build the relationships that make Ward 5 a great place to live.
